I have been actively swimming since 1994. As a marathon swimmer, I spend many hours in the lakes and pools. The water brings me pure joy.
62-year old Masters swimmer Kelly Palace broke the U.S. Masters’ record in the 500-yard freestyle for the 60-64 age group on Sunday at the 2023 SwimRVA Blast Off. Dylan Carter's swimming career has been remarkable and continues to rise. A standout at the University of Southern California, he earned NCAA Championship honors as a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay team.
As he cruised to gold in the 1500 freestyle, spearheading what would turn into a prolific three days for Team Ireland at the European U23 Championships, Dan Wiffen was slightly confused. Proud, obviously, and pumped for his team to win three gold medals on night one but also surprised to have recorded a time within one second of his personal best and more than seven seconds faster than his result from a fourth-place finish at the World Championships only 12 days earlier.

Periodically during Worlds, we’ll publish a piece on FINIS athletes.

Years before FINIS was a major player in the swimming apparel market with numerous training and racing products benefitting swimmers around the world, the company originated when two friends met up after one had returned from winning Olympic gold. Pablo Morales had retired after missing the Olympic team in 1988, but three years later, he returned to the sport, and he captured 100 butterfly gold in 1992.

My swimming coach at Indiana University, Doc Counsilman, was the first coach to use slow-motion underwater film to study swimmers back in the 1970’s. From his underwater window in the diving well at Royer Pool, Doc would run his Bolex 16 mm film camera at the highest speed possible, filming Spitz, Kinsella, Hickcox, McKenzie, Jastremski, Stamm, me and many others in super-slow motion. Then he would run to develop the black-and-white film (at his own expense) so he could have it in time to show us in his small office on Sunday mornings precisely how we swam so fast.
